Historical Background

The history of its name origin has two versions. Several historians and ancient philosophers, one of them Pausanias, mention that the settlement was built in ancient times by the Phoenicians as colony and was named Foinikous Limin. Others suggest that it came from the foinikoun (red) color that was produced during ancient era from the process of the purple shell.

The very early settlement of Foinikounta was built along a fantastic 400 meters beach and above a leeward bay, in mid-19th century, in order to become the base and the leeward refuge of local fishermen. The first building in this place was a small tavern (hence the very first name “Taverna” used, even today, by the locals for Foinikounta), where fishermen were relaxing, after hard work, chatting over a glass of wine or ouzo with fresh seafood, telling interesting stories and adventures related to their hard profession.

This small “Fishermen village” (Psarochori) has evolved, over the last 40 years, into an attractive touristic destination, particularly for those who look for a quiet and relaxing holiday.

Nowadays, Foinikounta features an excellent touristic infrastructure and offers to its visitors several remarkable dining and entertainment options, as well as, the opportunity to explore the surrounding area, which ideally combines island and continental environment and atmosphere.
