Escape and explore secluded and quiet beaches

Large & Small Marathi Beach

There are two wonderful sandy beaches, the small and the large Marathi. You can access them by renting a boat from Foinikounda. Another way is via 4×4 vehicle following the same route to Tsapi Beach, heading for Koroni. After you turn right from the main road going for Tsapi beach, you will find a crossroad with a dirt road on your right side, which leads only to small Marathi. Careful not to miss the sign. Large Marathi, which is the most attractive beach from the two, due to the calm and crystal clear waters, can only be accesed by boat. Either way you should get supplies, like water and snacks, before your visit them, because there is nothing there to find in short distance.

Kantouni Beach

Kantouni beach is a sandy beach with a wild beauty, consinsting with large rock formations on her depth which you can explore. You can access it by renting a boat from Foinikounda and it lies approx 15 minutes away. In this beach you can enjoy the sunset falling behind the Ionian sea. Again here you have to get supplies before you visit Kantouni.

Sapientza Small island

Sapientza is the second largest Island of the Messinian Oinousses (a famous Island Complex in southwest part of the Messinian seashores). There you can find just one small sandy beach called Ammos with magnificent turquoise crystal clear waters, surrounded by green forest, offering a remarkable scenery to enjoy your swimming. Sapientza is also famous for her many shipwrecks, which can be explored by visitors and there are thoughts for the future in creating an underwater archaeological park. Sapientza, along with all the Islands of Messinian Oinousses and the cape area of Akritas, are listed on the Natura 2000 program. The Island has more than 120 species that live freely there, one of them being the famous kri-kri (cretan goat) that can be seen even on the beach Ammos.

You can reach Sapientza’s beach Ammos either directly from Foinikounta by renting a boat or through the daily boat route from Methoni.

Agia Marina small rocky Islet

The rocky islet of Agia Marina or Agia Mariani is also part of the Island complex of Messinian Oinousses. It is located on the south part between Sapientza and Schiza Islands. It is a small almost round inhabitant rocky Islet where you can only find a small church on the tallest part of it, which is dedicated to Agia Marina. Here you can enjoy your swimming directly from the boat as there are no beaches to visit, but the majestic and graphical scenery along with the turquoise crystal clear waters will definitely attract you to take a dive. You can combine your visit here along with the Island of Sapientza were there is a beach to relax and enjoy the sun. Again here you need to have acquired supplies, such as water and snacks, prior to your visit. Agia Marina Islet, along with all the Islands of Messinian Oinousses and the cape area of Akritas, are listed on the Natura 2000 program.

To visit Agia Marina you can rent a boat from Foinikounta.
